How do I upgrade the PowerChute Network Shutdown (PCNS) application running on the Virtual Appliance.

Issue:
Want to upgrade the version of PowerChute Network Shutdown installed on the PowerChute virtual appliance.

Product Line:
PowerChute Network Shutdown

Environment:
PowerChute Network Shutdown version 4.3 when deployed with CentOS 7

Cause:
PowerChute Network Shutdown version 4.4. was released.

Solution:
We strongly recommend installing the latest version of the PowerChute Virtual Appliance. The latest version will contain updated security and an updated version of Linux.

Example:
The latest PowerChute Network Shutdown Virtual Appliance release is version 4.4.3, which includes AlmaLinux. PowerChute Network Shutdown Virtual Appliance release 4.4 and 4.4.1 include CentOS 8 which reached its end of life on 31 December 2021. The PowerChute Virtual Appliance installed with version 4.3 is CentOS 7 which reached end of life 6 August 2020.

NOTE: You can save the PowerChute configuration from an older version to use with a new Virtual Appliance. To do so login to the current PowerChute Virtual Appliance and go to /opt/APC/PowerChute/group1. Save a copy of the pcndconfig.ini file. After installing the new Virtual Appliance you can copy the saved pcnsconfig.ini file to the new Virtual Appliance. PowerChute will then use the copied configuration.

If you decided to only upgrade the PowerChute application and not the Linux VM we support upgrading PowerChute Network Shutdown version 4.3 to 4.4.
Support for upgrading PowerChute Network Shutdown Virtual Appliance older than 4.3 has ended.

To perform the upgrade:

Login to the Virtual Appliance and create a temporary directory, for example, /opt/temp

sudo mkdir /opt/temp
change directory to /opt the command is cd /opt
Verify the permission on the temp directory. the command is ls -la
The temp directory should have the permissions of rwxr-xr-x
  1. Download the PowerChute install files to a local PC.
  2. Copy the downloaded installation file from your local PC to the temporary directory using WinSCP or other FTP/SCP program, ensuring the user is root.
  3. In the console, change to the temporary directory and uncompress the installation file
  4. from /opt/temp run these commands
  5. gunzip pcns44ESXi.tar.gz
  6. tar -xvf pcns44ESXi.tar
  7. This will create a new directory called ESXi, so change to this directory
  8. cd ESXi
  9. Run the installation script and follow the instructions:
  10. sudo ./install_en.sh

Once the upgrade has been completed, reboot the PowerChute Virtual Appliance.
