How do I update the firmware of my SRT series Smart-UPS using the Firmware Upgrade Wizard?

There are two methods to update the firmware of the UPS:
  • Locally via a Serial or USB connection using the Firmware Upgrade Wizard application
  • Remotely via the Network Management Card
  • The Firmware Upgrade Wizard is the most reliable and preferred method of upgrading.
If you have a previous version of the Firmware Upgrade Wizard or Firmware Images, delete the old version and download the latest revision.

Product line:

Smart-UPS SRT Families



All Smart-UPS models beginning with "SRT" are supported.
Since we will continually release new products that are supported by the tool, we identify devices that are NOT supported.

Devices that are *NOT* supported by the Firmware Upgrade Wizard:

  • Legacy Devices:  Models beginning with: SU, SUA, SUM, SURT, SURTD, SURTA, SRC (IE: SUA3000XL, SU2200NET, SURTD3000RMXLT)
  • Next Generation Devices: SMX750, SMX1000, SMX1500 with firmware UPS 02.x or lower.
    • These units are 120 V devices built prior to date code 1037. Date code is the first 4 numbers in your serial number. (IE: Serial Number AS1036123456 Would not be supported.)
The system requirements for the Firmware Upgrade Wizard are as follows:
Operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP®, Windows Vista® , Windows 7®, Windows 8®, 8.1®, and Windows 10®
To find your current Firmware level:
Run the Wizard and it will identify the current firmware version before performing the update.
For all but SMC unit:
From the main menu of the UPS LCD screen select "About" and scroll down to "UPS Firmware"

Firmware Revision Matrix
 UPS Model  Firmware after Update
 SRT 5/6KVA (firmware less than 2.9)  UPS 02.9
 SRT 5/6KVA (firmware greater than 2.9)  UPS 04.1
 SRT 8/10KVA  UPS 04.7
Note: Upgrading SRT 5/6KVA units from version 2.x requires updating to version 2.9, and then it is recommended to update to the latest version.
This will require that you run through the firmware upgrade process twice. The first upgrade will bring you to 2.9 and the second upgrade will bring you to 4.1.

Note: If you are upgrading an SRT unit due to a "Needs Firmware Update" or "Battery Sys Error 0800" message, you MUST have your external battery packs connected when you perform the upgrade. If you connect more external packs at a later date and the issue returns, you will need to run the update again with all battery packs connected. Upgrading an SRT unit may take up to 20 minutes to complete. DO NOT REBOOT YOU COMPUTER OR ATTEMPT TO TURN OFF THE UPS DURING THIS TIME. The more external battery packs are connected, the longer the upgrade will take.

Note: You must use the serial cable that is included with your UPS. If upgrading via USB, it is recommended that you use the included USB cable.


Customers wanting to upgrade their UPS firmware should download  "Firmware Upgrade Wizard v4.1.1" as well as the "Firmware Upgrade Wizard Manual v4.1.1"  files. 
The "Firmware Upgrade Wizard v4.1.1" file contains the self-extracting executable file, as well as all necessary UPS firmware images. Read the "Firmware Upgrade Wizard Manual v4.1.1" before beginning the process.
The users manual provides a complete step by step walk through of the process including all necessary screenshots.
The complete process will take 5-20 minutes and will require that you power down any load attached to the UPS.
