How do I update the firmware of my SRT/SMC/XU/XP/SMX/SMT/SCL/SRC/CHS series Smart-UPS using the Firmware Upgrade Wizard?

Published date: 09 April 2021

There are two methods to update the firmware of the UPS:
  • Locally via a Serial or USB connection using the Firmware Upgrade Wizard application
  • Remotely via the Network Management Card
  • The Firmware Upgrade Wizard is the most reliable and preferred method of upgrading.

If you have a previous version of the Firmware Upgrade Wizard or Firmware Images, delete the old version and download the latest revision.
If you need to upgrade via the Network Management Card, refer to Kbase #FA164737

Product Line:
All Smart-UPS models with the SRT, SMC, XU, XP, SMX, SMT, SCL, SRC, and CHS prefix are supported via USB or Serial communication.

The Firmware Upgrade Wizard does not support the below Smart-UPS devices:

  • Legacy Devices: Models with the SU, SUA, SUM, SURT, SURTD, SURTA, and SRC prefix. For example, SUA3000XL, SU2200NET, SURTD3000RMXLT.
  • Next Generation Devices: SMX750, SMX1000, and SMX1500 with firmware UPS 02.x or lower.
These units are 120 V devices built prior to date code 1037. Date code is the first 4 numbers in your serial number. For example, serial number AS1036123456 would not be supported.
  • Devices not supported in v4.2.1: SMTL1500RM3UC, SMTL1000RM2UC, SMTL750RM2UC, SCL500RM1UC, SMTL1500RMI3UC, SMTL750RMIUC, SMTL1500RMI3U, SCL500RMI1UC, SCL500RMI1UNC, SMTL1000RMI2U, SMTL1000RMI2UC, SMTL750RMI2U, SCL500RMI1U, SMTL750RMI2UC, SRC10KUXI, and SRC5KUXI.

The system requirements for the Firmware Upgrade Wizard are as follows:

Operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP®, Windows Vista®, Windows 7®, Windows 8®, 8.1®, and Windows 10®.
To find your current UPS Firmware version via UPS LCD:
When you run the Firmware Upgrade Wizard, it will detect your current version.
Alternately, from the main menu of the UPS LCD screen, select "About" and scroll down to "UPS Firmware".

To find your current UPS Firmware version via Firmware Upgrade Wizard:
Run the Firmware Upgrade Wizard and it will identify the current firmware version before performing the update.

To find your current UPS ID:
Every Smart-UPS has a unique UPS ID. This can be found in the "About" menu on the UPS LCD screen, or via PowerChute.
  • You may find that the same models of UPS have different UPS IDs depending on when they were produced.
  • The final firmware version will be determined by the UPS ID and not the Model Number of the UPS.
  • If your UPS ID is not listed in the below table, it does not have an update available.
  • The Firmware Upgrade Wizard will select the correct version for the unit you are upgrading.

NOTE: You must use the serial cable that is included with your UPS. If upgrading via USB, it is recommended that you use the included USB cable.

NOTE: If you are upgrading any UPS unit due to a "Needs Firmware Update" or "Battery Sys Error 0800" message, you MUST have your external battery packs connected when you perform the upgrade. If you connect more external packs at a later date and the issue returns, you will need to run the update again with all battery packs connected. Upgrading an SRT unit may take up to 20 minutes to complete.
The more external battery packs are connected, the longer the upgrade will take.

NOTE: SRT1500XLJ and SRT1000XLJ UPS models have a factory firmware of UPS 8.0. Do not downgrade to any lower version.

Customers wanting to upgrade their UPS firmware should download Firmware Upgrade Wizard v4.2.1 as well as the Firmware Upgrade Wizard User Guide

The Firmware Upgrade Wizard v4.2.1 file contains the self-extracting executable file, as well as all necessary UPS firmware images. Read the Firmware Upgrade Wizard User Guide before performing the upgrade.
The User Guide provides a complete step by step walk through of the process including all necessary screenshots. The complete process will take 5-20 minutes.

If you run into any issues during the process or have any additional questions, please contact APC Tech Support.
