Configuring Microsoft Vista, Windows 7, 8, & 10, Windows 2008 & 2012 to safely shutdown without using APC's PowerChute software.

Issue:
How to configure Microsoft Vista, Windows 7, 8, & 10, Windows 2008, and Windows 2012 to safely shutdown without using APC's PowerChute software.

Product:
APC branded UPS with Serial Connections

Environment:
Microsoft Vista, Windows 7, 8, & 10, Windows 2008 & 2012

Cause:
Informational

Solution:

Microsoft Vista, Windows 7, 8, &10, Windows 2008 & 2012 do not have a native serial UPS shutdown. For a serial UPS use PowerChute Business Edition or USB to serial converter.

For any USB connected UPS these OS do have some configuration for shutdown if you do not want to use the supported APC software options. Once a USB UPS is connected, the OS adds configuration similar to that of a laptop with an on-board battery. Once this happens, you can set up a desktop or server's power options in the same way as a laptop.

Please review the attached PDF for step by step instructions:

Also, if the battery shutdown options are not displayed after uninstalling PowerChute software please review FAQ FA159743
