Our planet is faced with diverse environmental challenges: climate change in relation with energy efficiency and carbon footprint, raw material depletion in relation with material consumption and recycling, biodiversity and the safety of people and environment in relation with hazardous substances and wastes…

 

Faced with these challenges, numerous initiatives are in progress to set up rules or standards at national and international levels. In the electrical industry sector in particular, measures are being taken to address hazardous substances, energy efficiency, recycling and wastes. In this way, the national and international committees try to protect the planet environment by enacting the regulations that require eco-designed products, waste management and restrict the use of certain harmful substances and chemicals.

 

APC by Schneider Electric is responding to the increasing pressure of environmental legislation by designing our products with greater energy efficiency, fewer hazardous substances and eco-friendly recycling and disposal options.

 

Green Premium eco-mark to achieve environmental challenges

With Green Premium -- the Schneider Electric’s own unique eco-mark -- APC by Schneider Electric commits to disclose extensive and reliable information of the environmental impacts of our products. It allows our customers to confirm the compliance status of our products and incorporate our products effectively into their environmental policies. With Green Premium eco-mark, Schneider Electric provides a tool to help customers in calculation of carbon footprint, anticipating and ensuring full regulatory compliance concerning substances and chemicals, delivering all appropriate information to develop the eco-design of the solution and reducing the end of life costs by optimizing products’ recyclability.

 

APC by Schneider Electric defines a Green Premium product when there are available:

 

  • An environmental declaration (PEP - Product Environmental Profile);
  • An End-of-Life Instruction (EoLI);
  • The content of substances of concern as specified in the European REACh Regulation;
  • The declaration of no presence of lead, chromium, cadmium, mercury, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) above the thresholds specified by the European RoHS directive.
  • The declaration of no presence of lead, cadmium and mercury above the thresholds specified by the European Battery directive.

77% of APC Schneider Electric products’ revenues achieved with Green Premium products today. As a unique eco-mark with defined and clear criteria, all the environmental information is online available and assessed according to international standards.

Interpreting Product Environmental Profiles

Product Environmental Profile (PEP) documents published by APC by Schneider Electric offer a view of theenvironmental performance of products during their life cycle. PEPs represent a snapshot of environmental performance as defined by the conditions described in the PEP. As products are improved and the science evolves, the information in PEPs will change and present a picture of environmental performance improvements achieved over time.

Life Cycle Assessments and Enviornmental Indicators

APC by Schneider Electric selected the Environmental Information & Management Explorer (EIME) software tool to perform its full product life cycle analyses. This software tool has been specially developed for the needs of the electrical and electronic industry. It includes environmental indicators that help provide insight into the state of the environment and human health. Indicators are developed based on quantitative measurements or statistics of environmental condition that are tracked over time.
