Cause
This document provides a high level overview of APC Network Management Card's and their support for Simple Network Management Protocol.
Resolution
The APC Network Management Card 1 and 2 families (AP9617/18/19/30/31/35) and any device with an embedded version (such as Rack PDUs, Rack Power Filter, Netbotz 200, etc) support SNMPv1 and v3, not explicitly v2c. They are compliant with RFC1213 but also have an exclusive and extensive product specific MIB for full device support. The Network Management Card family supports SNMP traps for all UPS alarm conditions (e.g., on battery).
SNMPv1 is the initial implementation of the SNMP protocol. SNMPv2c then introduced new message formats and protocol operations that are incompatible with SNMPv1. Though, in order to use SNMPv2c, the Network Management Cards will utilize the SNMPv1 community strings and access control settings.
APC Network Management Cards support SNMPv2c enhancements except the InformRequest protocol operation. The other major addition in SNMPv2c (besides some format changes), was the GetBulk operation. The Network Management Cards do support that functionality with both SNMPv1 and SNMPv3. SNMPv3 also introduced security capabilities, such as authentication, integrity, encryption, that are not part of SNMPv2c which the aforementioned Network Management Cards support.
Lastly, certain applications (sumx, sy) also provide RFC1628 MIB support as outlined in knowledge base FA156148.
