What is priority scanning in StruxureWare Data Center Expert?
Issue:
What is the priority scanning option when discovering SNMP devices or configuring SNMP device scanning?
Product Line:
StruxureWare Data Center Expert
APC network enabled devices
Environment:
StruxureWare Data Center Expert 6.x and 7.x
APC devices with Network Management Cards (NMC) version 1 and 2
Cause:
StruxureWare Data Center Expert (DCE) is not a conventional trap receiver. DCE receives SNMP traps from APC devices when the device in an alert state The information received is intended for DCE only. DCE then polls the device for their sensor data and current state. DCE will alert based on the retrieved information.
Resolution:
StruxureWare Data Center Expert help defines priority scanning as follows:
"Priority Scanning is a trap-based polling process that only occurs in response to traps from APC SNMPv1 devices or informs from APC SNMPv3 devices at which the StruxureWare Data Center Expert server is defined as a trap receiver."
Here is a little more information on the process:
Priority scanning is a process where an APC device stores the DCE server IP address to a table not viewable by the user. When an event occurs at the APC device, the device sends an SNMP trap to the DCE server. DCE receives the trap and then polls the device for alert information. The alert has now been verified and DCE will notify users based on their notification policy.
This feature causes the manager and now DCE to verify the alarm before sending out what may be a false alarm. This feature is not implemented on 3rd party devices to this point as we do not have the correct OID to write ourselves in as a trap receiver to all devices and the specific communications that is expected at this time from the device is not available in all systems. This may change in later versions of DCE. Please note that this trap receiver value is verified / set approximately every hour on an APC SNMP device.
