Battery Replacement Procedure for Smart-UPS 700, 1000 and 1400 VA Rack-Mount Models

If the red "replace battery" LED on the UPS is illuminated, the Smart-UPS may need to have its battery replaced.

Follow the procedure for Smart-UPS replace battery self test to determine if the battery needs to be replaced.

Caution: Please confirm that the UPS is plugged directly into the wall. Excessive temperature may decrease battery life expectancy or cause an incorrect replace battery indicator.

bullet Battery Replacement Procedure
Note: Please read the warning at the bottom of this page before performing the procedure below.

Tools required: Screwdriver.

Battery replacement is a safe procedure, isolated from electrical hazards. You may leave the UPS and loads on for the following procedure. Caution: To avoid personal injury due to energy hazard, remove wrist watches and jewelry such as rings when replacing the batteries. Use tools with insulated handles.


Battery Replacement Procedure - Step 1 1. Reach into the finger pull and open the front cover. Swing the cover open.
Battery Replacement Procedure - Step 2 2. Unhook the side of the cover from the chassis and lift it away to expose the battery door. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or a coin to remove the two battery door screws and open the door.
Battery Replacement Procedure - Step 3 3. Grasp the tab and gently pull the battery out of the UPS and straight towards you. You may have to use both hands to pull the battery if necessary. Note: Be careful removing the batteries - they are heavy.
Battery Replacement Procedure - Step 4 4. Disconnect the battery leads. Loosen the connectors by gently wiggling them while pulling them straight back from the battery connector.
Battery Replacement Procedure - Step 5 5. Connect the battery leads to the new battery. Connect the red wire to the positive (+) terminal and the black wire to the negative (-) terminal. Note: Small sparks at the battery connectors are normal during battery connection. Slide the battery into the UPS, close the battery door, replace the battery compartment screws, and replace the front cover. Front Picture of Smart-UPS 700RM
6. Dispose of the old battery properly at an appropriate recycling facility or return it to the supplier in the packing material for the new battery. APC supplies pre-paid shipping tags for the return of the batteries to our recycling center. See the new battery instructions for more information.

 
Warning
  • This equipment contains potentially hazardous voltages. Do not attempt to disassemble the unit. The only exception is for equipment containing batteries. Battery replacement using the procedures above is permissible. Except for the battery, the unit contains no user serviceable parts. Repairs are performed only by factory trained service personnel.
  • The batteries in the equipment are recyclable. They contain lead and pose a hazard to the environment and human health if not disposed of properly. Return the battery to a factory authorized service center or refer to local codes for proper disposal requirements.

    CAUTION:

    • Do not dispose of batteries in a fire. The batteries may explode.
    • Do not open or mutilate batteries. They contain an electrolyte which is toxic and harmful to the skin and eyes.
    • To avoid personal injury due to energy hazard, remove wrist watches and jewelry such as rings when replacing the batteries. Use tools with insulated handles.
    • Replace batteries with the same number and type of batteries as originally installed in the equipment.
