Issue

How do I use remote syslogging with the APC Console Port Server?

Product Line
  • Rack Accessories
    • APC Console Port Servers (AP9301, AP9302, AP9303) - discontinued

Environment

  • All serial numbers
  • All firmware versions

Cause

It is advisable to configure the APC Console Port Server to send system syslog messages to a remote syslog host. This prevents an intruder from tampering with syslog messages stored locally.

Resolution

On the APC Console Port Server, remote syslogging is configured in /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf. The following statements appended to /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf will log system messages, with level warn or higher, to a remote syslog server at 10.0.0.1.

source sysl { unix-stream(\"/dev/log\"); };
filter f_alerts { level(warn .. alert); };
destination d_udp1 { udp(\"10.0.0.1\" port(514)); };
log { source(sysl); filter(f_alerts); destination(d_udp1); };

After appending these lines to /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf, run saveconf and restart syslog-ng or reboot the APC Console Port Server.
