Is there a limit to the number of e-mail addresses that can be configured to receive alerts from a NetBotz device?

Issue:

Is there a limit to the number of e-mail addresses that can be configured to receive alerts from a NetBotz device?

Product Line:

NetBotz

Environment:

NetBotz version 2 and 3 appliances.

Cause:

There are no hard coded limits to how many e-mail addresses can be associated with an alert action or sensor threshold.

Resolution:

When creating an alert action, you can add as many e-mail addresses to a primary, secondary, or short e-mail (SMS) alert as necessary. Additionally, you can add multiple alert actions to an alert sequence and multiple sequences to an alert profile. You can then associate each threshold with a single profile. You can however create multiple thresholds and multiple profiles. You can also configure threshold specific e-mail addresses. The configuration options can easily multiply the amount of alerts and e-mails being sent.

It is this wide range of configuration options that makes a NetBotz appliance extremely versatile. It can also cause the system to get bogged down if it were to be abused as each e-mail requires some memory and CPU time. There is no specific limit as each configuration and each environment is different. It is suggested that if more than 10 recipients need to be e-mailed about a specific alert that an e-mail group be created in your SMTP server. This way, the NetBotz appliance can be configured to send a single e-mail to this group and in turn, hundreds of recipients can be configured to receive an e-mail. Again, this recommendation can change based upon the system's hardware and software configuration.
